An evening-long symposium, Revolution In Counterpoint invites a small group of artists and scholars to discuss the creative models and concepts underlying various 20th century utopian political movements, putting these frameworks in discussion with contemporary performance art practice. The program will be moderated by philosopher John Rajchman and comprises presentations from literary theorist and political philosopher Michael Hardt and artist Rossella Biscotti on the legacy of the 1970s Autonomia movement, along with art historian Molly Nesbit in conversation with artists and media practitioners Raqs Media Collective on their thinking on art, agency and politics in the context of Raqs' Performa 13 commission, The Last International. Rather than attempting to define or delineate the events of the political past, Revolution In Counterpoint proposes a reflexive approach, hoping to detect traces of revolutionary thought within contemporary thinking in and around art. Revolution In Counterpoint will take place on Tuesday, November 19th, 2013 from 5 to 8 pm, followed by a reception, in the Judith Lee Stronach Center, located on the 8th floor of Schermerhorn Hall at Columbia University. This event is free and open to the public.
