revolution in counterpoint symposium | columbia

https://www.facebook.com/events/1426397434238544/?ref_newsfeed_story_type=regular Columbia University’s Department of Art History & Archaeology presents Revolution In Counterpoint: Contemporary Performance Art and the Political Past. An evening-long symposium, Revolution In Counterpoint invites a small group of artists and scholars to discuss the creative models and concepts underlying various 20th century utopian political movements, putting these frameworks in discussion with contemporary performance art practice. The program will be moderated by philosopher John Rajchman and comprises presentations from literary theorist and political philosopher Michael Hardt and artist Rossella Biscotti on the legacy of the 1970s Autonomia movement, along with art historian Molly Nesbit in conversation with artists and media practitioners Raqs Media Collective on their thinking on art, agency and politics in the context of Raqs' Performa 13 commission, The Last International. Rather than attempting to define or delineate the events of the political past, Revolution In Counterpoint proposes a reflexive approach, hoping to detect traces of revolutionary thought within contemporary thinking in and around art. Revolution In Counterpoint will take place on Tuesday, November 19th, 2013 from 5 to 8 pm, followed by a reception, in the Judith Lee Stronach Center, located on the 8th floor of Schermerhorn Hall at Columbia University. This event is free and open to the public. This event is made possible by the Department of Art History & Archaeology at Columbia University and is organized by graduate students in the MODA: Critical & Curatorial Studies program Eva Lu, Juliette Premmereur, and Valerie Werder.

Joseph Beuys quotes on Social Sculpture

"My objects are to be seen as stimulants for the transformation of the idea of sculpture. . . or of art in general. They should provoke thoughts about what sculpture can be and how the concept of sculpting can be extended to the invisible materials used by everyone. "THINKING FORMS--how we mold our thoughts or SPOKEN FORMS--how we shape our thoughts into words or SOCIAL SCULPTURE--how we mold and shape the world in which we live: SCULPTURE AS AN EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS; EVERYONE IS AN ARTIST. That is why the nature of my sculpture is not fixed and finished, processes continue in most of them: chemical reactions, fermentations, color changes, decay, drying up. Everything is in a state of change." “Only on condition of a radical widening of definitions will it be possible for art and activities related to art [to] provide evidence that art is now the only evolutionary-revolutionary power. Only art is capable of dismantling the repressive effects of a senile social system that continues to totter along the deathline: to dismantle in order to build ‘A SOCIAL ORGANISM AS A WORK OF ART’… EVERY HUMAN BEING IS AN ARTIST who – from his state of freedom – the position of freedom that he experiences at first-hand – learns to determine the other positions of the TOTAL ART WORK OF THE FUTURE SOCIAL ORDER.”
